A masjid or a mosque in the Arabic language is a place where Muslims worship and takes center stage in the Islamic life. It is the place where Muslims congregate to hold their prayers that solemnize five times a day as a necessary part of the faith. Mosque is thought of as a holy place that brings spiritual improvement, unity of people, and sincere relationship with Allah. They tend to be constructed to face the direction of Kaaba in Mecca which is the holiest place of Islam and this direction is known as the Qibla.

Mosque is not just a prayer place; it is also a community center among the Muslims. It is a teaching ground where the citizens are united in Islamic lectures, Quran recitations as well as religious classes. Social meetings and communal gatherings and even charitable activities are also provided in many mosques. The mosque functioned as a place of religion as well as civic activities during the period of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and so it exists in most Muslim communities to date.

The mosques differ in size and architecture depending on the area, and culture. The former ones have domes and minarets and the latter are more simplistic. The inside of mosques has been cleansed and many times has a huge prayer hall that is covered by carpets. The worshippers should take off their shoes to enter it and ablution (wudu) before praying. It is mainly divided into men and a woman area and Imam is the leader of prayer and he stands at the front of the assembly.

Jumu is a special type of prayer which is offered on a Friday and those prayers are done in groups at the mosque. This is a weekly meeting which helps in building the relationship between Muslims and also reminds them of their unity in religion and in obligations. Mosques do not only define buildings, but it is a symbol of unity, peace, and devotion. They still have a great part to play in shaping the spiritual and the social life of the Muslims worldwide.
