The tomb and Mosque of Prophet Muhammad also called Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is situated in the holy city of Madinah, Saudi Arabia, which is the most holy place in Islam. The mosque was originally constructed by the Prophet himself, but later civilizations/rulers have added to it over the centuries and made it more beautiful. It is regarded as the second holy mosque in Muslim religion and after the masjid al-Haram mosque in Makkah. What makes it of even greater spiritual significance to the Muslims everywhere in the world is the fact that it contains the tomb of the Prophet.
The original structure of the mosque was on one side; the other side had the room of his beloved wife named Aisha, who was blessed with the provision of burying the Prophet Muhammad in the chamber (peace be upon him). This poor graveyard was then covered by the mosque as it was extended. By the side of the Prophet are his two best companions and first two caliphs of Islam, Abu Bakr as-Siddiq and Umar ibn al-Khattab. Their burial near the Prophet is perceived as a symbol portraying a great commitment and devotion to the Islam religion in both his lifetime and after.
The visitors of the muslim pilgrims come to the mosque not only to pray but also to give their greetings to the Prophet as they visit his grave, which is located at a well-decorated green dome which is also called the Green Dome. Although graves are not a place of Muslim worship, the Muslims will show love and respect by giving peace and blessings to the Prophet. This is a very spiritual act, strengthening the existing connection between the faithful individuals and their Prophet, even in time.
The importance of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is also significant in the community life and education in Islam. It is the place of the Prophet where, between his pulpit and his tomb, there is a special place called Rawdah by the Prophet himself as being a garden of the gardens of Paradise. This place is a good place of praying that is very rewarding. The mosque is a place of peace, education and reunion with the early years of Islam with a Muslim having an opportunity to think about the heritage of their Prophet Muhammad whom they love and about the message he preached.
