Islam belongs to emerging religions of the world and its population is more than 2 billion people. This serves about one-fourth of the world population and therefore renders Islam as the second-largest religion after Christianity. The population of Muslims has been continuously growing throughout recent decades, which is caused by the combination of several factors which include an increase in the number of children born in the Muslim-led countries, the younger median age of the Muslim population, and the number of people who convert into Islam in other regions.
Most of the Muslim population in the world is in Asia Pacific. Hundreds of millions of Muslims can be found in the countries of Indonesia, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. Indonesia is the same Muslim country that has the biggest population where Pakistan is a close second. Though the Middle East and North Africa are perceived as the core regions of the Islam religion because of their history and the religion they preach, it does not host the largest population of the Muslims in the world as there are many Muslims in South and Southeast Asia.
Muslims are also large and increasing in Sub-Saharan Africa. In nations like Nigeria, Sudan and Somalia, Islam is dominant or popular. Traditionally, Europe and North America only had smaller populations of Muslims, yet their population is sprouting at an alarming rate over the past few decades. Western countries have benefited due to immigration, high fertility mass, and the involvement of people in religion which has led to growth of the Muslims.
At large, Islam is expanding across the world as far as strength and reach are concerned. It is estimated that by 2050 the number of Muslims can be equal to or even surpass that of Christians provided the trends in recent times continue. This expansion has significant social, cultural and political repercussions to most of the regions. The rising figures are not only documented demographical patterns, but also the continuity and strength of Islamic religion in various cultures and continents.
