Umrah is an Islamic kind of worship that has a great level of spiritual importance to Muslim world. Contrary to Hajj, which is a one in a lifetime requirement after you have met the financial and physical requirements, Umrah is not compulsory hence it can take place any time of the year. It is a very good deed which is highly recommended and highly rewarded though not obligatory in Islam. Umrah draws the believer near to his creator, qualifies as a source of atonement of those sins that may have been committed previously and it gives the individual a special chance to revive their faith and religious trust.

The performance of Umrah involves the state of Ihram, Tawaf (go around the Kaaba), Sa i (run between the hills of Safa and Marwa) and the last is to cut or shave the hair. Although these acts are very basic, they are full of meanings and history, which encapsulates the pilgrim into the history of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), his wife Hajar, and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). All these steps are done with devotion and basically serve to purge the soul of worldly thoughts thus enabling the pilgrim to concentrate totally on the worship of Allah.

Umrah normally occurs in two forms which include Umrah al-Mufradah and Umrah al-Tamattu. Umrah al-Mufaradah is the wild form of the Umrah and it is done throughout the year and it does not relate with Hajj. Umrah al-Tamattu is done simultaneously with Hajj and it belongs to the Tamattu form of Hajj, on the other hand. Here, pilgrims undertake Umrah during the months of Hajj and then they undertake Hajj in the same year, taking out of Ihram between the two rituals. Both of them bear untold reward and are highly spiritual.

Umrah is not merely important due to the rituals that are performed, but also because of the spiritual process that is usually involved in the journey. Most people find it heart warming and life changing to go to the holy city Makkah and pay their first visit to the Kaaba. Minimalism and honesty of the rituals carried out when participating in Umrah makes Muslim people recall the key concept of faith: humility, compliance, and devotion to Allah. Umrah is an effective method to help Muslims become closer to their Creator no matter how many times it has been performed, as well as get rid of the burdens of everyday life.
